After a disappointing 2012, will 2013 deliver any better economic news for the UK? On the face of it, the omens do not look especially encouraging. Fiscal austerity is set to bite harder this year. Over the coming months, rising food and energy prices are likely to keep inflation elevated. At the same time, the ongoing fragility of the euro area and the onset of fiscal tightening in the US are likely to present significant external challenges.
