Renewables - creating a better place

Written By Shaun Durham - 23rd March 2009

Jackie, who is already actively involved in recruiting within the sustainable and renewable energy sectors, was extremely inspired having attended an event hosted by the CIPD in which James Shaw of Carbon Considerations and Graham Ledward, from the Environment Agency, discussed Climate change and what we can do to help.

James Shaw explained how Carbon Considerations offer a range of services tailored to their clients needs developing robust Climate Change and carbon management strategies.

One of their most successful assignments was with Tesco who, through employee engagement to shift the organisational behaviour toward a low carbon culture, identified £17.35m of savings through behavioural change alone, with no capital investment. That is 92,466 tonnes of CO2.

Graham Ledward, Director of Resources for the Environment Agency spoke passionately on how individuals and businesses can actively assist in creating a better place for our future, our children's future and our grand children's future, with the impact of global warming already visible today, it will only continue to deteriorate unless we act NOW.

As individuals and business leaders we need to think about, waste, water, mileage, energy and carbon.  I was extremely impressed to hear that since 2006, The Environment Agency have reduced their car travel for 12000 staff by 9 million miles.  Their  approach included extensive use of car-sharing, encouragement to use public transport (the use of public transport miles versus car mile for all Directors is published on their internal web site), league tables of the 'worst' drivers, increasing telephone conferencing, route planning and also more simple measures such as bicycles for city based employees.

We all need to stop and think.  Its time to change and create a better place for our future
