Tim Eustace, Operations Director, Bottomline Technologies
Moon Consulting has a strong track record of working in the Technology and Software sector. To ensure our market knowledge remains up-to-date, we regularly speak to business leaders at the heart of this cutting-edge sector. As part of this, we met with Tim Eustace, Operations Director of FinTech company Bottomline Technologies, where we discussed his route to becoming Operations Director, the challenges he has faced so far and his tips for budding operational leaders.
Tim is an experienced Director with an excellent track record of P&L growth in both revenue and margin. He is currently in charge of Bottomline's Operations for Global Business Solutions in EMEA and North America, including Pre Sales, Professional Services, Project Management, Implementation and Support for Bottomline's Cloud Based Payment and Cash Management Solutions.
Bottomline Technologies help their customers to make complex business payments simple, secure and seamless. Businesses and banks rely on Bottomline for domestic and international payments, effective cash management tools, automated workflows for payment processing and bill review and state of the art fraud detection, behavioural analytics and regulatory compliance.
Tim's extensive business process knowledge, gained in many different B2B environments, has been instrumental in his career development to date. However he also remembers the skills he learnt at Crown, one of the world's premier manufacturers of packaging materials, very early in his career. "As Systems Administrator, I ran the Manufacturing System which came with a whole host of responsibilities. I also wrote the procedures that achieved accreditation of the ISO9001 quality standard," says Tim. "I honed my organisational and arithmetic skills, but from an operational point of view, I also learnt how to deal with people at different levels of seniority and the process of how a product is manufactured."
Operations Directors face many trials and tribulations on a day-to-day basis and we were interested to hear some examples from Tim. He says, "Previously I have had to consider increasing revenue whilst simultaneously driving our margin up, which can be challenging. Or looking to adjust pricing models without decreasing the value customers receive, and without impacting them negatively. Sometimes it's more about identifying small, incremental and positive changes rather than big step ones.
Appreciating the value of Tim's time, it would be remiss of us not to request some words of wisdom. Tim contributes, "Adapting to people management is extremely difficult without appropriate training. I would highly recommend undertaking any relevant courses in order to strengthen this attribute."
Tim is also a strong believer that practice makes perfect. "The retention of fine detail is imperative," he says. "Study your numbers in as greater detail as possible prior to meetings in order to ensure you are immaculately prepared."
"My final piece of advice would be to know your people. As a leader, you're only as good as your team," concludes Tim. "And don't be afraid to promote colleagues ahead of yourself. This shows strength, maturity and may even have an adverse effect on your career if you fail to do so!"
