Tom Beasley, Head of Bristol & Bath Science Park

As the result of a retained search campaign conducted by Moon Consulting, Tom Beasley joined Bristol & Bath Science Park in January 2016 as Head of the Forum and Innovation Centre. Since his appointment, Tom has made a major impact to the Science Park by increasing occupancy in the Grow-on space from 58% to fully let.  He is now focussing on filling the proposed second building. The number of virtual tenants, who benefit from the site's networking and business spaces, have almost quadrupled since Toms appointment; forming a pipeline of potential future tenants.

Bristol and Bath Science Park (BBSP) is a world class hub for innovation; bringing entrepreneurs, businesses and academics together in a multi-functional facility where science meets design.  Boasting a number of high-profile start-up and expanding tech-focussed businesses, BBSP is a magnet for disruptive innovations. BBSP currently comprises four main buildings; The Forum (a reception and areas for networking), the Innovation Centre (a space for emerging businesses) and the Grow-On Centre (for expanding businesses).  The Science Park is also home to the National Composites Centre who have their own separate building.

We asked Tom how BBSP contributes to the economic growth of the region.  "Bristol is leading the way, demonstrating how businesses outside of London can compete by working collaboratively to everyone's benefit. Bristol offers an attractive location with strong universities producing skilled graduates, good office accommodation and reasonably priced housing. The Science Park is playing its role in the West of England Economy working with SME's and large businesses, allowing them to be flexible in their plans for the future and creating an environment that is both attractive to employees and investors alike".

Having got off to a flying start at the Science Park, Tom was promoted to Head of Bristol & Bath Science Park in December 2016, just 11 months after his initial appointment.

Tom's role as Head of Bristol & Bath Science Park is varied; as well as being the main point of contact for the Park, his day-to-day activities include business development, dealing with legal advice and leases, resolving any estate or facility issues that arise and networking with tenants, advisors and other business leaders. Tom is also leading the marketing and communication activities for the Science Park, and actively encourages his team of make better use of communications technologies such as social media and web. BBSP is shortly due to launch a brand, new tenant portal website and are working with Bristol start-up Solverboard to introduce an online collaboration and ideas platform.

With innovation being at the forefront of this business, Tom says "We are embracing technology to help drive business efficiency and value for money.  This in turn is providing a better experience of growing a high tech business for our tenants".

As the Science Park continues to be cemented as one of the leading locations in Bristol and the region for Science and Technology based businesses, BBSP has renewed its relationships with the wider network of West of England Incubators, Accelerators and Co-Working spaces including UWE Future Space and the University of Bristol, and the University of Bath Set-Squared. New entrants are actively welcome to this market and Tom has been asked to sit on the UWE Enterprise Zone / Future Space advisory board.

We asked Tom about his vision for the next twelve months "My predecessors did an excellent job creating a vibrant and collaborative community. The Park was established and had completed its initial start-up phase very successfully. We now look forward to three projects coming to fruition.  Firstly, we hope will be a positive funding decision by the University of Bath at the Science Park to build the institute of Advanced Automotive Propulsion Systems.  Secondly, we look forward to the  final go-ahead on our next multi-tenanted  building and , lastly, to the successful conclusion to negotiations with commercial occupiers to build at the Science Park."

Tom'sappointment at BBSP was a result of a thorough search campaigned conducted by Moon Consulting Director, Vanessa Moon. "We enjoyed working on this high-profile campaign and were delighted with Tom's appointment. Tom's previous experience working in similar positions meant that he had an impressive skill set and abundant knowledge to help him succeed in this role."

From observing Tom's career so far at BBSP, it is clear to see that he is excelling in his role, and adding significant value to the business. We, at Moon Consulting, are thrilled to watch his progress as this outcome demonstrates the importance of determining cultural fit as well as a fit based on skills and knowledge.
